Email Deliverability Term

Spam Trap

An email address used to identify and catch spammers.

Definition

A spam trap is an email address specifically created or repurposed to catch spammers. There are two main types: pristine traps (addresses that were never used by real people and only exist to catch scrapers) and recycled traps (abandoned email addresses that have been repurposed after a period of inactivity). Hitting a spam trap severely damages your sender reputation because it indicates you're sending to addresses that never opted in or haven't been cleaned from your list.
