Email Deliverability Term

Soft Bounce

A temporary email delivery failure that may succeed on retry.

Definition

A soft bounce is a temporary delivery failure where the email was recognized by the recipient's mail server but couldn't be delivered at that moment. Common causes include a full mailbox, server temporarily unavailable, or message too large. Unlike hard bounces, soft bounces may succeed if retried later. However, if an address consistently soft bounces over multiple attempts, it should be treated as a hard bounce and removed from your list.
