Email Deliverability Term

Spam Complaint

When a recipient marks your email as spam.

Definition

A spam complaint occurs when a recipient clicks the "Report Spam" or "Mark as Junk" button in their email client. This feedback is sent to the sender through feedback loops (FBLs) provided by major mailbox providers. High spam complaint rates (above 0.1%) severely damage sender reputation and can lead to blacklisting. To minimize complaints, only send to opted-in recipients, make unsubscribing easy, and send relevant, expected content.
